Non abbiamo notizie precise riguardo la vita di questa santa, alla quale papa Simplicio, nel V secolo, dedicò una chiesa sull'Esquilino. Eppure il culto di Bibiana è stato assai vivace, forse anche grazie al suo nome, che ha la stessa origine del nome di Viviana: un nome, nell'etimologia popolare, legato al verbo «vivere», e quindi sinonimo di vitalità, vivacità, e augurio di spirituale sopravvivenza. Secondo la «Passio Bibianae», questa santa sarebbe una delle vittime della persecuzione anticristiana dell'imperatore Giuliano l'Apostata (361 - 363), un devoto pagano che ostacolò la fede cristiana despite the freedom of religion proclaimed by Constantine in 313.
