Syracuse, third century - Syracuse, December 13, 304
the virgin and martyr Lucia is one of the most dear to Christian devotion. As mentioned in the Roman Missal is one of the seven women mentioned in the Roman Canon. Lived in Syracuse, would have died a martyr under the persecution of Diocletian (around the year 304). The acts of his martyrdom, tell of terrible torture inflicted by the prefect Pascasio, who would not bend to the extraordinary signs that God was showing through her. Just in the catacombs of Syracuse, the largest in the world after those of Rome, was found a marble inscription of the fourth century, which is the oldest evidence of the cult of Lucy. A devotion spread rapidly: already in 384 Sant'Orso dedicated a church in Ravenna, Pope Honorius I shortly after another in Rome. Today worldwide there are relics of Lucia and art inspired her.
