Immaculate Conception
already celebrated by sec. XI, this feast is part of Advent and Christmas, joining the messianic expectation and the glorious return of Christ with the admirable commemoration of the Mother. In this sense, the liturgical period should be considered a particularly suitable time for the worship of the Mother of the Lord. Maria is the most holy, free from every stain of sin, the Holy Spirit almost and formed as a new creature. Already prophetically foreshadowed in the promise to the ancestors of the victory over the serpent, Mary is the Virgin who shall conceive and bear a son whose name shall be Immanuel. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed by Pius IX in 1854.
