Sant'Eligio
Chaptelat (near Limoges, France), 588-590 - The Netherlands, December 1 (?) 660
was born in Chaptelat (near Limoges in France) around 590. According to legend, the devil came to him dressed as a woman: and he, Eligio, quickly grabbed him by the nose with pliers. This legend is depicted in colorful two cathedrals in France (Angers and Le Mans) and the cathedral of Milan, with the window of Niccolo da Varallo, a gift from the Milanese jewelers in the fifteenth century. The historical Eligio, the son of humble people, however, must have received an education, because he was hired as an apprentice goldsmith Lyon Abo, who also directed the Royal Mint.
