St. John Damascene, priest and doctor of the Church
Damascus from 650 to 749
was born around 675 in Damascus (which Damascus) Syria. His father was Minister of Finance. Cultured and brilliant, he became adviser and friend of the Caliph that the prefect who led the Arab region. The traffic of Monaco Sicilian Cosmo, carried captive to Damascus, brought his desire to retire to a solitary life, with his brother, the future bishop of Maiouna. So he went to live in 'Laura' of San Saba small village of monks in Jerusalem, where he was ordained and by virtue of its deep theological training, he was appointed preacher of the holder in the Holy Sepulchre. Among his works alongside the hymns and theological treatises dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is the author of the compendium of theology "Source of Knowledge and of the" Three speeches in favor of sacred images. " Enlightened and well-educated theologian, he earned the title of "St. Thomas of the East". In 1890 Leo XIII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church. (Future)
